The Dementia Action Alliance is committed to helping people live fully with dementia and supporting those who care about them.

Help Us Change Attitudes about Dementia!

There are currently 5.2 million Americans living with dementia, including Alzheimer’s in the United States; an amount equal to all the people combined who live in Oregon and Hawaii. Dementia impacts not only the person affected but also his/her family and friends adding another 15 million people impacted - an amount equal to all the people combined who live in Washington, Colorado, and Utah.

People living with dementia and those who support them face many challenges. Besides managing cognitive and physical changes to their health, they deal with isolation and stigmatization because negative information about dementia is the norm for public information. Society’s widespread negative perceptions fuel fear, misunderstanding, and add to the burden of living with the condition. It does not have to be this way.

Learning that people can live fully with dementia is an antidote to misperceptions of dementia. Take a moment (actually 7 minutes) to view “Person-Centered Matters,” an extraordinary video based in hope and possibility about living fully with dementia.

The Dementia Action Alliance is committed to helping people live fully with dementia and supporting those who care about them. We are a volunteer coalition engaged in changing our nation’s understanding of and attitudes about dementia through serving as a trusted source for education, conversations, and advocacy.

GEM LUNCH & LEARN -Please join us as we explore the world of advance care planning

This Tuesday 8/4 at the Baum Center @ 11:30

We welcome Ellie Ward, BSN, RN

Please join us as we explore the world of advance care planning- that is, going through the steps necessary to create legal documents (advance directives) specifying what care you want (and don't want) that are reflective of your values and what matter most to you, so that the care you receive at the end-of-life matches your preferences.  Advance directive documents will be made available at this session, and for anyone that wishes, can be finalized on site, complete with notary seal (you must have a valid driver's license for this step).  If you have internet access, please visit http://www.vidanthealth.com/advancecare and download an advance care planning toolkit and answer the reflective questions at the front, in preparation for Tuesday's presentation and discussion.  If you do not have internet access, no worries, you will be provided the toolkit and we will go through it step-by-step as a group.

This program is ideally a dialogue, so jot down your questions and any concerns you have about advance care planning, so we can collectively learn from each other.
