Art in the Park
Art in the Park
by: Gail Sonnesso, MS, QDCS, Founder and Executive Director GEM Day Services, Inc. a non-profit working to provide meaningful programs for families with their loved ones living with memory loss at home
Art at the Park is a GEM program for folks with memory loss fashioned to provide meaningful afternoons for both the person with dementia and their family caregiver.
It is widely accepted that 70% of people with dementia live in the home and with this in mind GEM works to provide meaningful activities for families caring for their loved ones in the home environment.
For example, one of our Art at the Park programs took place in our local aquarium. Kaye, an aquarium volunteer, led us [a mix of GEM volunteers, family caregivers, paid caregivers and people with memory challenges] on a tour of the turtle rehabilitation center, the shark tank and the touch tank.
Next we joined Beth, Aquarium Educator in a classroom and learned about seaweed marbling. We all donned our aprons and selected our colors and floated the paints in the thickened water. We swirled the paints to create designs and then carefully laid an alum treated paper over the design and even more carefully lifted the paper up and laid newly created design on newspaper to dry..
As we snacked on homemade cookies and brownies made by a volunteer we listened to “sea critter” themed music performed by Nick on a guitar.
The goals of Art at the Park are:
1. Quality time for both the person with memory loss and their caregivers
2. Demonstrate to the caregiver and volunteers that the person with memory loss CAN be SUCCESSFUL and engaged in activities with the appropriate supports
3. Engage and train community volunteers about how to interact, engage and respond to and people with memory loss
4. Reduce the stigma of dementia perceived in the community by providing an opportunity to relate to folks and get to know them as individuals
5. Educate the staff at parks and refuges to successfully interact with people with dementia
6. Demonstrate to all involved that engagement in the arts as “treatment for people with dementia” really works
GEM provides an Art at the Park program once a month and thanks to funding from the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America and the Outer Banks Community Foundation there is no charge. We also recognize our wonderful volunteers including GEM Board members, the staff of the parks and community friends.

GEM art will be part of the Mollie Fearing Art Show in May 2015
Mollie A. Fearing Memorial Art Show
10-Jan-2011
The Mollie A. Fearing Memorial Art Show features an eclectic mix of local art, on display at the Dare County Arts Council through the month of May.
The show was created to honor Mollie Fearing, a Dare County native. Mollie was a visionary who understood the role the arts play in creating a balanced society. In 1975, a group of Dare county residents met at the her home where they set about founding an organization that would introduce thousands of school children and adults to music, dance, theater, painting, sculpture, poetry and literature. The organization would initially be called the Sea and Sounds Arts Council and later, the Dare County Arts Council. Mollie Fearing was elected president of the Arts Council in 1975 and was a vital supporter and advocate of the arts until the time of her death on September 3, 1997.
Mollie's contributions to the community were numerous, from serving as mayor for the Town of Manteo, to serving on the board of the Roanoke Island Historical Association, to her dedication to the arts. Mollie's legacy in our community remains strong to this day, and it is fitting that the show be held at Dare County Arts Council's home, the historic 1904 Courthouse in downtown Manteo - our county seat.
In testimony to her passion for culture, the artists flock to the park over the course of two days bearing their creations, which will hang in a ceiling to floor extravaganza. Visitors will feast their eyes on works including paintings, drawings, printmaking, sculpture, fiber, metal and ceramic art as well as mixed media.
It is standing room only at the gala reception which gives community members a chance to meet the artists up close. It also gives artists the chance to mingle with other artists who are either Dare County Arts Council members or residents of this coastal county of Dare.
By attending year after year, gallery-goers mark transitions and growth in the life of artists, see new trends, and witness how a medium is expressed by a variety of folk. A lump of earth becomes a glazed vessel of great beauty. A snow white canvas transforms into an ode to color and shape, a human face or a blazing sunset. Artists showcase what matters to them from a quiet appreciation for nature to pondering the nature of the universe. And the best part? Every show is unique year after year as new artists move into the area and familiar faces move into new areas of expression.
The Mollie A. Fearing Memorial Art Show is open to members of Dare County Arts Council and residents of Dare County 18 years or older. Cash awards include "Best in Show", "Excellence Awards", "Honorable Mentions", and a "People's Choice Award".
For more information on this show, see this website under the "Calendar" tab, or contact Dare County Arts Council at (252) 473-5558.
GEM is very excited about being a part of this and we thank our board and community volunteers who support our seniors.
Thank you!
